DR.m.s.kapadiaThe port traffic at 13 major ports degenerated into an annual decline of 1.73 per cent during 2011-12, according to tentative IPA data, from 1.57 per cent increase in 2010-11 and 5.74 per cent in 2009-10. The shipments during H2 practically stagnated at H1 level of the year. Around 95 per cent of India's foreign trade by volume and 70 per cent by value is transported through sea, and major ports account for three-fourths of the total cargo by volume handled at Indian ports.

Six ports had lower volume of cargo, against 3 during 2010-11. Even as Kolkata and Paradip had to contend with lesser freight for the second year, and Haldi Dock, Visakhapatnam Chennai and Mormugao ports suffered decline, against increase in 2010-11, New Mangalore bounced back with 4.4 per cent increase from declines in the earlier two years. Among the cargoes, iron ore business (largely export) declined 30 per cent, rotting further from 13 per cent drop in 2010-11 due to mining problems in Karnataka and export duty. Barring Kolkata and Kandla, relatively minor players in the field, all ports found iron ore business plummeting during 2011-12. The downturn had deep impact in Pardip, Visakhapatnam and Mormugao, whose iron ore shipments went down 53 per cent, 17 per cent and 28 per cent, respectively. POL shipments almost stagnated against 3 per cent increase in 2010-11. Among the major players, Kandla saw the volume go down 3 per cent and

port trafficMumbai saw a nominal increase, even as Paradip and Cochin enjoyed 16-17 per cent increase in POL shipments. Among the other cargoes, thermal coal shipments shot up 16 per cent, eight times the rate a year ago, due to 23 per cent increased volume at Paradip and 32 per cent at Ennore. Other industrial cargo was up by 4 per cent (0.42 per cent). Container shipments increased by 5.4 per cent, half the rate in 2010-11. The rate of growth at JNPT dropped from 6 per cent to 3 per cent and that at Chennai nosedived to 2 per cent from 25 per cent a year ago.
